First you/your child will be offered a psychological pre-diagnostic assessment (£130) to learn what you or your child’s needs might be. You might be unsure of whether you/child needs a full assessment or whether something else might be happening for you/them, so a pre-diagnostic psychology session is here to reassure you and provide you with some initial answers. Dr Sarah and team believe that this first step is important; ethically (as you might not need a full assessment), financially (you don’t want to be spending unnecessary money) and there might be something that needs to happen first to ensure you/your child are getting the right help immediately.
For a full diagnostic assessment the number of sessions and time needed can depend on lots of different things. An Autism or ADHD assessment can take about 2-4 sessions. We will be transparent with you to let you know what is needed and how long it will take, once we have met with you.
Things you are likely to be asked to do:
● Fill out some questionnaires
● Have an interview about your/child’s life and needs
● Provide a person we can speak with, who knew you in your childhood, preferably a parent or caregiver. If these people are not available to you, having someone who has known you for a while and knows you well, is helpful. Do not worry if this is not available to you- we will discuss this in your initial session.
● Do a standardised assessment where we will do some activities and answer some questions.
-
Once the assessment is completed Dr Sarah will inform you as to whether you meet the criteria for Autism and/or ADHD. If you do not meet the criteria she will give you an explanation as to why you present as you do.
We will provide you with a full and comprehensive assessment report for why the decision was made. We will also provide you with a short summary letter (if wanted).
We will provide you with recommendations for what might be helpful for you moving forward.
● For example, if you are a child/ young person, we will provide recommendations for; school/college/uni, family and what you might need support with in the future.
● For example, if you are an adult, we will provide recommendations for; work, managing relationships and support you might need e.g. from a therapist.
We know a range of helpful organisations and resources that could help you after a diagnostic outcome.
We can provide different services to support you before, during and after your diagnosis, including therapy, social work, and family advocacy, these are at an additional fee.
